Why Do Midterm Elections Matter?

9/28/2026

When people think about elections, presidential elections often get the most attention.

But presidential elections aren't the only elections that shape our communities.

The 2026 midterm elections will determine leaders at federal, state, and local levels.

Elections Aren't Abstract
Decisions made by elected officials can affect people's everyday lives.

For queer and trans communities, government policies and decisions can affect areas including:
  • LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination
  • Transgender rights and healthcare
  • Education
  • Housing and economic security
  • Mental health and community support
  • Immigration
  • Public safety
  • Civil rights
  • Community-based services

These issues can involve different levels of government.

That's one reason it's important to understand not only what an issue is, but also which government or elected office has authority over it.

This Isn't About Telling You What to Think
QSCC Votes isn't going to tell you which positions you should support.

Instead, we'll help explain the issues and provide information about the roles of different elected officials.

Understanding an issue doesn't require you to agree with one particular position.

It starts with understanding what's being discussed.

Get Informed
As you prepare for the 2026 elections, ask yourself:
  • What issues matter to me?
  • Which level of government handles those issues?
  • What responsibilities does the office I'm voting for have?
  • What are the candidates publicly saying?

Those questions can help you become a more informed participant in the democratic process.

Learn. Research. Decide for yourself.
